Circular design to drive resilience

· circular design to drive resilience ·

Civilizations, countries, populations… have be facing crises for centuries. Crises shape our history and our future.

Since December 2019, the World is facing a new crisis, a global crisis. The coronavirus has had massive impacts on our societies. There are many victims of the virus, others worked working 7/7 to offer decent sanitary conditions or food supply, some had to stop working to take care of their relatives or because their organization was suffering from the lockdowns.

This crisis taught us how connected is our world and how interconnected are individuals, countries and organizations. It teaches us how much abnegation has got professionnals working in hospitals, supermarkets or schools. And how powerful are digital revolution and high technologies to make us keep working and the scientific research progressing.

But beyond that, this crisis proves how organizations can innovate when resources are missing and when there is a situation of scarcity. It also demonstrates how individuals and corporates can cooperate to pursue a common mission and create shared value. It finally reconnects us with reality and learns us that our systems need to be resilient to survive the next crisis.

Cooperation, creativity and sobriety, key words to face crisis

During Covid19, we faced a lack of industrial capacity, and we saw families, workers and corporates gathering fabrics, machines and time and dedicate their energy to other, such as the project Masks.CoronaVirus.Brussels.

Covid19 teaches us how much interdependent our value chains are; it had major impacts across different sectors and industries. Despite recession, big corporations found new functions with existing resources thanks to cooperation and creativity such as Decathlon did with its Scuba Masks. A circular economy example that illustrates optimization and reuse.

Circular economy and regenerative economy to solve the Environmental Crisis

Covid19 outbreak strengthens individuals, organizations and nations. But it also gives businesses and individuals an opportunity for self-reflection and many have chosen to reassess their practice, with long-term consequences on the model businesses employed to create value from the work they do and the products they make.

With the Covid19 these companies had a chance to take a step back on a current other crisis: the environmental crisis. They also experimented resource optimization, cooperation, creativity, reuse… Each of these are fundamentals of the circular and regenerative economy.

Bringing together long-term mission, collaborative mindset and quick action, organizations are able reverse resources scarcity, biodiversity loss and global warming. That is why businesses, cities and associations need to be sure they know and use the right .

Businesses can fix the broken supply chains and better consider 21st century issues in order to prevent the global and non-reversible consequences of the environmental crisis.

Businesses are ready to drive circular economy and design resilient models.
