In the Paris area, bulky waste management represents, per year :

  • 30 tons of waste per inhabitant
  • 20 to 40 tons of waste and more than 40 operations per collection for rippers
  • 200,000 € cost for work-related accidents for rippers

SULO, a world leader in waste collection containers and associated services, wanted to improve the sorting and management of bulky waste in collective housing.

To achieve this, SULO called Circulab to design and then test a new bulky waste management service.

3 steps

  1. Running a participatory Circulab challenge
    • Involving all stakeholders: municipality, maintenance staff, team of local associations, SULO team, etc.
    • To find a collective solution for managing bulky items
  2. Prototype design of a collection area
    • Specifications (required materials, identified partners)
    • Prototype modelling
  3. Test development
    • Users’ journey modelling (residents, professionals, associations)
    • Communication strategy definition

« Circulab is a real pleasure to work with. They know how to listen, guide and propose useful action plans to get things moving in the direction of more sustainable development. »

Julien Delamaere

Marketing manager @ SULO

Circulab proposed a mobile collection area dedicated to bulky items management.

4 tools were provided :

  1. Ready-to-use service
    • Reducing dangerous handling and time spent by rippers, as well as managing bulky items costs
    • Located at the centre of communal housing to facilitate social bonds between residents
    • Providing local recycling associations with new material flows
  2. Users’ journeys
    • Simple, defined uses for each user type
  3. Video for sponsors
    • Demonstrating how the collection area works
    • Secured funding from the Île-de-France Region, Citeo and Syndicat Émeraude
  4. Communication materials
    • Graphic guidelines
    • Posters and booklets for residents
    • Information material

  • Value Chain Canvas
  • Partner Map
  • Circular Canvas
